When John Henry Savage, the 18-year-old son of a respected High Street butcher, was handed a brochure on the British South Africa Police by his careers master at Stamford School in Lincolnshire, little did he realize Rhodesia was to become part of him for life.

Long before this vibrant self-governing colony became an independent Zimbabwe, young Savage was carving out a successful career as a district police officer at remote outposts on the High Veldt of central Africa.
